Terra cotta, from its Italian origins, means baked earth, and is a type of earthenware that’s porous and can be either glazed or unglazed. It is characteristically, as its name implies, brownish orange, and is often used to make pottery like pots, vases, bowls and various outdoor sculpture, or even structures.
As a naturally material it is abundant and easy to use, and in this case a slim vase has been sculpted out of it, albeit in the shape of a soda pop bottle. This ceramic vase is coated with sand, giving it a desert look and also in the process making it more tactile – lovely to look at and lovelier to hold. Its tiny mouth means you can only place long reed plants in it, although it can be used simply as a decorative piece.
